Organized in 1993 by reed man John Isaksen for weekly appearances at Tom Bergin’s Irish Pub in West Los

The Musicians

Dan Comins (cornet & leader) grew up in Boston and played with most of the bands in that area.  On arriving in California he joined Dan Barrett's Back Bay Jazz Band, and then played for over thirty years with the South Frisco Jazz Band.  Dan owns a tax consulting business in Burbank, Calif., and in winter is a ski instructor.

Mike Baird (clarinet & sax) played with South Frisco Jazz band continuously since it's rebirth in 1965.  He is a composer of many jazz and ragtime songs, and has written film scores and TV commercials. He has played and recorded with many bands in the Southern California area including the Eldorado Jazz Band, Jelly Roll Jazz Band, Dawn of the Century Ragtime Orchestra, and Back Bay Jazz Band. 

Vince Saunders (banjo) formed his first South Frisco Jazz Band in 1956 and led that band until their last formal concert in 1998. He now plays with Golden Eagle Jazz Band and Titanic Jazz Band.  He recently retired after many years as a design engineer with George Fischer Plastics Company in Southern California. 

Robbie Rhodes (piano) also played in the South Frisco Jazz band continuously since 1965, and he appears in several ragtime shows and concerts each year. He worked many years at Lockheed Aircraft Company as an electronics designer and now edits the daily electronic newsletter Mechanical Music Digest.

Keith Elliott (trombone) studied classical music until age 18 when he was rescued by Eugene "Rosy" McHargue, the venerable singer and arranger and C-melody sax player of Santa Monica, and he appears on several of McHargue's recordings.  Keith owns a music school in Ventura, Calif.

Ray Cadd (tuba) has played and recorded with the Frisco Syncopaters and the Yerba Buena Stompers and other fine bands playing the West Coast style jazz. His playing reflects his admiration for players like Walter Peyton and Lawson Buford, tubists of the “golden age”.  Ray is a storyboard artist working with Hollywood TV ad agencies, and for fun he has created cover art for several CDs.

Chris Tyle (drums), of Portland, Oregon, leads Chris Tyle's Pacific Players and he previously played with Turk Murphy Jazz Band, Hal Smith's Rhythmakers & Frisco Syncopators and several bands in New Orleans.  Besides performing on drums, cornet and clarinet, he teaches at jazz camps and writes historical notes for the online jazz resource JazzStandards.com
